TIPS TO SAVE STEEL IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.

Some tips to save steel in your building. Are you planning to construct your home on your own? Then do go through steel saving tips, which will reduce your cost of construction and save your bucks.

TIPS:

1) Plan your building in a square shape than Rectangle. At least the Length of the building is not more than 1.5 times the width of the building. A larger size of rooms increases beams and columns too to carry loads properly.

2) Do the Soil test and Design the foundation accordingly. For up to G+2 storeys residential building we can ignore soil test but foundation design should be done.

3) if the soil is not good try to improve the bearing capacity of soil instead of heavy foundation. And if possible consult with Civil Engineer(Geotechnical Engineer) for remedies.

4) For heavy column load, a foundation with a pedestal shall be economical in case of isolated footing. Prefer trapezoidal footing to pad footings.

5) For long-span slabs increase slab thickness instead of increase reinforcement.

6) Room size also try square or at least Length to width ratio not more than 1.5, then roof slabs are Two way which is economical than the one-way slab.

7) Try equal spacing of columns. The Span of columns tries to accommodate not more than 30 % variation.

8) Avoid long-span cantilevers. ( slab & beam)

9) Avoid Floating columns as far as possible.

10) Use Fe 500D grade or above steel to reduce steel consumption.

11) Use lightweight block-like AAC blocks instead of brick walls. Reduces a lot of self-weight.

12) Keep in mind 1 kg of concrete may cost you Rs. 6 to 7 /- but
1 kg of steel is Rs 60 to 70/- so increase concrete Quantity instead of steel by designing economical structure by Civil Engineer.
